Interior Design – what’s the point?

How hard is it to pick some cushions, and chop them like they do on The Block? What’s the point of engaging an Interior Designer? Don’t they just want to turn your home into a magazine spread, which is completely unliveable? I don’t want to spend my money on a design I don’t even like!

Interior Design goes way beyond cushions and some artfully stacked books on the coffee table.  At its essence, Interior Design is about creating functional spaces, which look and feel fabulous.  That’s one of the reasons this business is called +Positive Space Design – I create spaces for my clients which make them feel good.  Note that I said I create them for my clients – not for me.

Interior Designers are specialists in planning space; from before a build is commenced, right through to purchasing and positioning furniture.  We produce technical plans, and liaise with trades to get the project completed within the required timeframe and budget.  We find the right pieces from a bunch of suppliers who are often wholesale only, and we get the best prices – it’s who you know, right?!

But aren’t Interior Designers really expensive?  Let me reframe your question – can I get value for money from an Interior Designer?  The answer is a resounding YES!  It’s much more cost effective to plan things well at the outset, than to tear down a wall that you’ve just had built, or sell a brand new lounge that doesn’t really fit in the room.  There are too many stories of people putting their hard-earned cash and blood, sweat and tears into a DIY reno, only to find that they’re almost happy with the result. An Interior Designer can save you thousands of dollars (and perhaps your marriage!) with their knowledge and skills.  Seems a small price to pay!
