How to Decorate with Pantone’s Ultra Violet

Pantone announces their Colour of the Year each December, and it is always met with strong opinions from all sides.  2018 will be the year of Ultra Violet 18-3838, and it has polarised from the start!  Pantone says “A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.”

Purples have represented mystery and magic, royalty, a bohemian lifestyle, and creative pursuits in varying guises over the years.  How will designers and retailers incorporate Ultra Violet into the mainstream?  Love it or hate it, it will inform colour choices in many spheres of design, so get on board people!

Often, we shy away from strong colour, preferring to err on the side of caution (and let’s be honest – blah!). Personally, Ultra Violet isn’t a colour I’m drawn to, but used in the right amounts, in a curated space, it can be great. This doesn’t have to mean painting your room this hue (but if you do, please send me some photos!).  If you can make it work for you – go for it…but be prepared to repaint soon; an ultra violet room ain’t gonna be around long!

So how can you make Ultra Violet sing in your space?

Using Ultra Violet with Colour

Try using colour with colour.  Ultra Violet is a great colour to use with a selection of other bright tones.  Check out the room below – it may seem counter-intuitive, but sometimes, more colour actually feels less ‘in your face’.  This gorgeous artwork by Larissa Blake has bright purple elements which really draw the piece together.

Toning Down Ultra Violet

Ultra Violet is obviously a vibrant colour, but you can tone it down a little by using some other purples or blues nearby, or perhaps make the room a little darker and moodier.  Why not add some velvet for texture and luxe?  Or perhaps use this stunning dark floral wallpaper by Ellie Cashman?  Doesn’t the purple look amazing against it?

Using Ultra Violet as an Accent

If you’re not convinced, but still want to give a nod to the colour of 2018, what about a cushion,  or a set of violet glassware for the table.  It’s just enough to let everyone know you know what’s trending in the world of design.

Perhaps you could pop a pop of colour on your Christmas list!
