Your kitchen is more than a place to cook—it’s the heart of your home, where meals are made, conversations flow, and family life unfolds. Whether you’re designing your dream kitchen in a gorgeous new home, or finally bringing a long-envisioned renovation to life, a thoughtful design enhances functionality, elevates aesthetics, and boosts resale value.
To help you achieve your dream kitchen, here are 10 expert kitchen design tips from a certified kitchen designer to guide you through the process.

Kitchen Design Tips from a Certified Expert
1. Start with a Functional Kitchen Design Layout
A great kitchen starts with a well-planned layout, however, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The classic kitchen work triangle – connecting the sink, cooktop, and fridge – creates an efficient workflow, but today’s kitchens also incorporate zones for food prep, cooking, and cleaning. Some also have an admin space for all the paperwork a busy household accumulates.
I’m often tasked with designing a kitchen with an island and butler’s pantry, however, squeezing them in at the cost of overall functionality is disastrous. Your space may be better suited to an L-shaped, U-shaped, or galley kitchen. If you entertain frequently, an island can provide additional prep space and seating, or a spot to serve all the dishes you’ve created.
Consider how your household works:
Do you have a daily lunchbox production line for five school-aged children?
Do you host drinks and nibbles every week or two?
Are your cake decorating skills the envy of the school mums?
Are your meals gourmet 3 course affairs?
Do you actually never cook? (Not judging!)
No two households are the same, therefore no two kitchens should be the same either.
2. Set a Realistic Budget
Setting a clear budget based on your priorities is essential. Research how much to allocate for design, cabinetry, benchtops, appliances, and trades to ensure you’re investing in what matters most. A well-planned budget keeps you focused and helps you make informed choices. Be upfront with your kitchen designer so you receive a realistic estimate and can decide where to splurge and where to save. Without a clear budget, I can design a stunning kitchen to your specifications, but it may include features beyond your price range. No matter your budget, you deserve a kitchen that brings you joy.
3. Maximise Storage with Smart Solutions
Storage is one of the biggest challenges in kitchen design. Make the most of your space by incorporating drawers of varying sizes, pull-out pantry shelves, corner solutions (my favourite is the Häfele Magic Corner), and vertical storage options. Custom cabinetry is always preferable to off-the-shelf offerings, because it is be tailored to fit your needs, whether it’s a beautiful back-lit drinks cabinet, a built-in spice rack, concealed bins, or fully integrated appliances. Think about what you use daily and design your kitchen to keep essentials easily accessible, without tripping over each other.

4. Choose Durable, High-Quality Materials
The kitchen is the workhorse of the home, therefore selecting the right materials is crucial.
When choosing benchtops, consider options like natural stone, sintered stone, porcelain, and silica-free engineered stone for durability and ease of maintenance. If you love cooking and entertaining, sintered stone, porcelain, and the right natural stones are heat-, scratch-, and stain-resistant. Engineered stone provides a low-maintenance, more budget-consious option.
For cabinetry, polyurethane, timber veneer, or laminate finishes offer a balance of style and longevity.
Splashback tiles and stone slabs can make a stunning impact, while being easy to clean.
Don’t forget the flooring! Changing your flooring after you’ve installed a beautiful new kitchen can be a headache.
Bonus tip I always start with either the flooring, or a feature slab of natural stone to inform the overall colour palette.
5. Layer Your Lighting for Ambience and Functionality
Good lighting transforms a kitchen, making it not only practical but also inviting. A well-lit kitchen includes three layers of lighting:
- Task lighting: Bright lights over benchtops and work areas for food prep and cooking. These might be recessed into the upper cabinetry to light the bench, or directional spot lighting from the ceiling or walls. Make sure you don’t cast your own shadow!
- Ambient lighting: Considered general lighting for the space, usually from ceiling fixtures or pendants to create overall warmth and illumination.
- Accent lighting: Creates flair, style, and depth to the space, while having the added benefit of illumination! A well chosen pendant can give the desired ‘wow factor’ whether it’s night or day. You could consider backlighting your feature stone for some extra pizzazz.
Ensure you choose high quality lights, and the right temperature for your finishes. All downlights are not made equal, and I’d argue that they’re one of the least appealing lighting styles.
6. Invest in High-Performance Ventilation
A well-ventilated kitchen keeps the air fresh, minimizes cooking odors, and prevents grease buildup. A powerful, quiet rangehood is essential, especially in open-plan layouts where smells can spread to living areas. Choose a model with a high extraction rate and low noise levels to maintain a fresh and peaceful space. Whether seamlessly integrated into your cabinetry for a sleek look or designed as a statement piece, the right rangehood enhances both function and style.
7. Integrate Appliances for a Seamless Look
Built-in and integrated appliances create a minimalist, clutter-free kitchen. Consider a concealed dishwasher, a fully integrated fridge, or a downdraft rangehood which is fitted into the benchtop or cooktop.
For a premium option, with the right benchtop, an integrated cooktop is completely hidden between the bench and cabinetry, giving an uninterrupted benchtop surface – stunning!

8. Incorporate Smart Kitchen Technology
Technology is transforming contemporary kitchen design, offering convenience, efficiency, and safety. Some of the latest smart kitchen features include:
- Powered cabinetry only needs a light touch to open or close. This is especially useful for integrated appliances, concealed bins (no touching for hygiene), and for accessibility for differently-abled users.
- Wi-Fi-enabled appliances that allow remote control via smartphone apps.
- Induction cooktops with built-in safety features. See #7 for an integrated induction cooktop.
- LED-lit cabinetry and stone for improved visibility and aesthetics.
9. Future-Proof Your Kitchen Design
Trends come and go, but a well-designed kitchen should stand the test of time. Selecting neutral colour palettes isn’t always a “safe” choice, particularly with the recent ‘white kitchen trend’. Often, a carefully considered use of colour is more timeless and less impacted by trends.
Use of high-quality materials is important for longevity, and value for money. Ensure that your layout plans for the projected needs of your household, and can evolve with you.
If you love to be on-trend, introduce those elements through easily changeable finishes like splashback tiles, or counter stools.
